B&W - Advanced Clean-Energy Technology

The Babcock & Wilcox Company (B&W) is a leading international original equipment provider of advanced clean-energy technology solutions and services for the power industry worldwide. B&W was founded in 1867 and continues to be a leader in the power industry.

Steam-generating equipment and air-quality control systems (AQCS)

B&W's power-generation products include steam-generating equipment for fossil, renewable, waste-to-energy and nuclear fuels. B&W is also a leading supplier of AQCS for fossil-fired unit applications. The company's integrated services include design/engineering, manufacturing, component and equipment upgrades, condition assessment, operational enhancement systems, field engineering, and advanced technology research and development.

New and retrofit steam generators

B&W supplies steam generators and auxiliary equipment worldwide for various fuels with steam capacities ranging from 10,000kg/hr saturated steam (shop assembled 'package' boiler) to >1,000MWe ultra-supercritical coal-fired units. Modifications and upgrades to existing steam generators are designed and supplied to improve unit reliability and performance, as well as reduce emissions.

Examples of various upgrade and retrofit applications of existing units include component replacements designed for cyclic operation or fuel switching, and low NOx burner and SCR retrofits for NOx reduction. B&W offers the Powerclean™ system that enables intelligent boiler soot-blowing with benefits that include reduced steam consumption, erosion reduction and improved steam-temperature control.

Air-quality control equipment and technologies

Air-quality control equipment and technologies designed and provided by B&W and our licensees include flue-gas desulfurization systems for SO2 reduction; particulate removal devices, such as electrostatic precipitators and fabric filters; and dry sorbent injection systems for various emission control such as SO3 and mercury. These technologies can be provided on a stand-alone basis, or as integrated emission-reduction solutions for new units or retrofitting in existing units.

Renewable-energy generator technologies

Diverse renewable fuel sources (such as biomass and alternative waste fuels) and the need for higher capacities drive technology selection for new and retrofit applications. The various steam-generator technologies offered by B&W include circulating fluid-bed boilers, bubbling fluid-bed boilers, stoker-fired boilers, biomass gasifiers, and suspension and co-firing in existing coal-fired boilers.

Thermal solar technology

B&W has developed a commercial thermal solar technology option for zero emissions. B&W's current design of solar boiler has been in operation since October 2009, producing approximately 2.6MWe from a single tower. This solar tower arrangement is scalable to utility power applications.

Oxy-combustion carbon-capture technologies

B&W has developed oxy-combustion carbon-capture technology that achieves near zero emissions and greater than 90% CO2 capture. Reference plant designs are being developed for 300MWe and 550MWe units. Pilot plant testing has been completed on various fuels, and B&W is now ready to demonstrate the oxy-combustion CO2-capture technology on a commercial-scale project.

Post-combustion CO2-capture technology designed to achieve up to 90% CO2 is in development, based on advanced solvent-based CO2 scrubbing. B&W has a pilot regenerable solvent advanced technology (RSAT™) scrubber facility in operation at the B&W R&D facility.

The next phase of development is a near commercial-scale field demonstration. B&W's RSAT CO2-capture technology can be used in new coal, oil or natural-gas-fired units, or retrofitted in existing ones.
