At Arla Foods, it's all about milk. As Europe's largest dairy products manufacturer, the company employs more than 20,000 people. In Videbæk, Denmark, whey protein and lactose are produced. The whey protein is used mainly as a high-quality dietary supplement. Lactose has the effect of stabilising colour and is used in bakery products, sauces, confectionary and sausages, and also as a carrier substance for medications.
The efficient, reliable supply of process heat is of crucial significance for the process of manufacturing these substances. Throughout the entire production chain, the strictest demands are made in terms of environmental compatibility, hygiene and safety. The old, existing boiler system was unable to fulfil the company's expectations when it came to availability, energy efficiency and extremely low emission rates, and it was decided that a new, ultramodern boiler house would be built.
The overall planning was the responsibility of Alectica engineering in Viby, Denmark. Consultancy on site was provided by our sales and service subsidiary LOOS SCANDINAVIA in Denmark. The modular LOOS product range, with highly efficient steam generators and a PLC-based control and regulating concept standard was able to convince the company of its merits. The plant was installed by the Danish systems installation firm Herning VVS from Herning.
The system consists of three LOOS UNIVERSAL UL-S steam boilers with a capacity of 12t/h each. An integrated ECONOMISER, downstream calorific value heat exchangers and modern speed and oxygen regulated firing systems ensure maximum efficiency and minimum emissions.
The company also opted for innovative technology when it came to the use of chemicals. The LOOS WATER ANALYSER LWA module continuously records all of the most important water parameters and ensures that chemicals are added only when needed, whilst also regulating the deaeration function to ensure energy-efficient, cost-effective operation.
Arla was one of the first customers worldwide to be supplied, in spring 2007, with the LOOS BOILER CONTROL LBC/LSC – the latest generation of boiler and system controls with intuitive touch panel operation. Modern bus technology made it possible to install the boiler system into the existing control technology without problems. Fitted with cost-effective hardware for LOOS TELESERVICE, the system can, if necessary, be analysed and administered by LOOS specialists. The risk of expensive production losses is dramatically reduced.
The innovative system has now been in operation for 10 months. During this time, well over 300 LOOS steam and hot water boiler systems with the new touch screen controls have been delivered and commissioned.
