SUCcess — Start-Up Control combined with Shutdown and Standby — is the name of the most recent innovation from Loos, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Bosch Thermotechnik. The control and equipment version facilitates fully automatic steam boiler operation. Triggered by a single push of a button or an external request signal, start-up and shutdown processes are completely automated. During normal operation, the integrated automatic functions intervene if there is too much steam extraction, protecting the system from corrosion, brining and water impact.
The new control version is available as an option for all Loos high-pressure steam boiler systems. In addition to the usual boiler equipment, boilers equipped with SUCcess have motorised steam shut-off and starting shut-off valves as well as an automatic blow-down valve. The automatic functions can be accessed through the Loos boiler management system LBC. It is possible to retrofit existing Loos systems with SUC.
SUCcess avoids in particular the high mechanical loads for shell boilers during cold starts. These loads are due to the considerably greater temperature difference between the flame tube and the boiler shell. In order to avoid such high loads, the boiler must be started up exactly as described in the operating instructions. Therefore, the boiler should only be charged at low burner output until it reaches mean working gauge pressure. During the start-up process, it is advisable to allow a small quantity of steam to flow off in order to stimulate the boiler water's natural circulation. Allowing too much steam to flow off would cause water entrainment, water impact and increased brining of components. In the heat maintenance phase, steam can be extracted every time the burner is switched on, thus stimulating the boiler's natural internal water circulation. This breaks up temperature stratification.
