Solvina Improves Power Reliability at Billerud Gruvön Paper Mill

14 May 2007 14:19

Solvina has contributed to a vast increase in reliability and performance of the power supply at the pulp&paper mill Billerud Gruvön in Sweden. Activities to enable island operation and improve reliability have been carried out along with installation of a new turbine, new switchgear, protection systems and new transformers. Careful modeling was made of the power system, new selectivity plans were made, island operation planning and tests of the new turbine were carried out, and an ambitious operator training program was performed. Settings of earthfault relays were also tuned with respect to transformer inrush phenomena. The purpose of the efforts were to minimize the effect and duration of disturbances, and optimize the ability for island operation as a backup operation mode.

Billerud Gruvön has 1,100 employees and produces almost 700,000t a year of sack and kraft paper, containerboard and market pulp.
