Island Operation Optimization and Planning at a Pulp Mill

Island operation optimization and planning at a pulp mill Solvina has recently signed a contract with a big Swedish pulp mill to optimize the mill for island operation. Simulations will be performed to analyze how island operation can be run in an optimized way.
It will be analyzed through the following criteria:
- what criteria will be used to disconnect the power system of the mill from the national grid, both for manual and automatic disconnections
- what critical events can be handled during island operation
Instructions for island operation will be written and the operators will be trained how to handle island operation. Prior to this work the control systems of the steam turbines and generators have been upgraded, and Solvina have tuned the control systems and performed island operation tests of the units. Fewer disturbances caused by lightning strikes in the power grid and a higher availability are aims of this project.
