Improving Power System Stability – Control Design Requirements and the Necessity Of Testing Power Plant Performance

03 December 2007 12:01

At CIGRE’s Regional Meeting “Security and Reliability of Electric Power Systems” June 18-20, Tallinn, Estonia Solvina presented their work within island operation and reliable power restoration planning.

Solvinas method of testing island operation capability, identifying and tuning control parameters and evaluating the power plant process was presented. All these tests are performed during normal operation.

Several tests of this kind have been carried out on different kinds of power plants. The results of these tests have shown that in about 90% of the cases different errors have caused improper operation and unstable conditions.

On the other hand, after tuning, and different corrections almost all machines have shown stable behavior. Several types of phenomena were presented at the meeting such as mechanical backlash, unsatisfying calibration of measuring equipment and improper tuning of controllers, which cannot be taken into account when tuning parameters using classical approaches.
