Synengco Say Knowledge Automation is Key to Managing Information Assets

15 December 2009

Ever day, a swell of data and information is being processed by organisations around the world. Synengco Pty Ltd (Synengco), an award-winning specialist engineering consultancy firm, predicts that if organisations don't prepare adequately, this swell may turn into a tsunami. In the future, this "information overload" may reduce a company's ability to extract value from its information assets. Synengco's solution is knowledge automation.

Synengco defines knowledge automation as the process by which an organisation generates value from its knowledge or intellectual capital. It is all about stimulating and managing an environment in which knowledge is created, shared, harnessed and used for the benefit of an organisation, its people and its customers.

Synengco put forth a solution that examines the use of modelling, intelligent and adaptive systems as tools to extract increased value from information stores. This work is emerging in a climate where there is a growing demand for improved knowledge management systems.

A solution not only for the power industry

At the leading energy conference ISA(D) POWID INDIA, Synengco presented a paper on how organisations can best prevent knowledge overload while addressing the declining numbers of specialists able to analyse this amassing wealth of information. The paper puts forward a knowledge automation solution that would help managers to extract "maximum value from information assets".

Co-authors Don Sands, CEO of Synengco, and Sadananda Deshpande of Honeywell Automation India Limited presented the paper to 160 major Indian and overseas energy delegates. It was voted best paper at a session of ISA(D) POWID INDIA 2009. This was the first time that Synengco attended the conference, which makes the award all the more special.

"The paper gave us the chance of providing thought leadership to the knowledge management and energy markets," said Sands. "From some of the responses at, and since, the conference, this role is being ratified."

ISA(D) POWID INDIA is regarded by many in the industry as the leading event for the Indian power industry, particularly in the areas of automation and control of power plants. However, Synengco's paper holds a valuable message not only for energy organisations, but any organisation that relies on drawing knowledge from stores of data and information.

Experts in intelligence information systems

Synengco are no strangers to real-time intelligence in information systems. They are the developers of the innovative technology SentientSystem®, which brings optimisation, intelligent alarming, early warning and root cause analysis to some of the world's largest power stations. This technology is now licensed globally to Honeywell International.

By virtue of its engineering, SentientSystem is one of the few technologies perfectly positioned to deliver a solution to the challenge of securing future value from information systems. Its flexibility and ability to learn makes it ideal for adaption to knowledge management applications.

"Yesterday was all about gathering information," said Sands. "Today is all about ease of access to information and extracting value from information assets. And tomorrow will be all about extracting maximum value from information assets."
