Last May 2007, four DEUTZ Power Systems TCG 2020 V16 gas engine gensets were installed in the future recycling plant in Zaragoza. These gensets are the heart of the CHP (Combined Heat and Power), ordered to DEUTZ Power Systems Iberia, by a procurement contract on a turnkey basis. It will be part of the future recycling centre of Zaragoza, property the Council.
Once the plant is performing at full capacity, the CHP will generate approx. 5.5MW of electricity powered by landfill gas produced in the fermentation of the urban waste. This is enough for supplying power to the recycling plant and additionally to 20,000 city inhabitants.
The exhaust gases and the cooling system of the gensets will additionally recover approx. 6MW of heating energy which can be used in the anaerobic fermentation process of the organic waste, for producing the landfill gas.
The CTRSU Zaragoza (Solid Urban Waste Processing Plant) assumes the processing and recycling of urban wastes from the Aragon Capital city and 61 surrounding villages, placing Zaragoza at the top of European cities in terms of waste recycling.
For this plant, DEUTZ Power Systems Iberia, S.A. has provided an integral solution corresponding to the customer’s requirements, making a turnkey supply of the cogeneration system by supplying the gensets together with all auxiliary equipments, pipes, control cabinets, heating recovery systems, silencers as well as the engineering necessary for the installation of the plant.
The main innovation introduced by DEUTZ Power Systems in this plant, consists of a double gas fuel system, natural gas / landfill gas, which not only enables the gas engine to work with each one alone, but also both gases can be mixed in any different proportion between zero and hundred per cent, whereas the engine can deliver full output at every proportion.
This system was one of the main requirements of the customer, as landfill gas coming from biomethanization of the urban wastes has in its composition a great variability in the methane proportion. So the fuel mixing system should be adapted to the quality of generated landfill gas, all of this without any manual adjustment by the plant operator.
Furthermore in case of any grid blackout, the DEUTZ Power Systems engines could be started by an auxiliary genset, in order to provide the costumers with electricity and ensure power for the independent plant operation.
