GE Energy has been awarded a contract to provide two Jenbacher gas engines for a new landfill gas-to-energy plant being built in Genova in northern Italy.

GE Energy is supplying two, 1.4-megawatt JGC 420 GS-L.L engines to Asja Ambiente Italia SPA of Torino. The environmental engineering procurement company is installing the Jenbacher gas engines at the Monte Scarpino municipal landfill site in the hills overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. It is expected that four additional engines will be installed at the site.

The two Jenbacher gas engines generate power with an electrical efficiency of 41.9%. All of the plant's power output will be delivered to the local grid.

In addition to the fully containerized Jenbacher gas engines, GE's scope of supply includes the patented Jenbacher CL.AIR® exhaust gas treatment system for each engine, plant commissioning, and start-up services.

By utilizing Jenbacher's CL.AIR® system - a secondary treatment of exhaust gas - the plant can achieve carbon monoxide emission levels of under 300 mg/Nm3, well below the Italian government's maximum of 500 mg/Nm3.

Italy is encouraging the development of landfill energy projects to help the country reduce greenhouse gas emissions. With the use of Jenbacher gas engines, landfill operators are able to reach high availability with low environmental impact.

Asja Ambiente Italia, a longtime Jenbacher gas engine customer in Italy, is building the plant for Azienda Multiservizi & d'Igiene Urbana (AMIU) Genova. AMIU Genova is a multiservice company operating in the public urban health field and owns the landfill, where Genova's municipal waste is stored.

The Monte Scarpino project is considered a twin of a plant at the Basse di Stura landfill, which began operating in 2004 in the city of Torino, northeast of Genova. GE Energy provided six of its 1.4-megawatt, Jenbacher gas engines for the Basse di Stura project.

Based in Jenbach, Austria, GE Energy's gas engine business is a global manufacturer of reciprocating engines, packaged generator sets and cogeneration units. Jenbacher engines run on natural gas and various "specialty gases" created from landfills, coal mines, sewage and industrial wastes.

GE's Jenbacher engines have outputs of 0.25 to 3 megawatts and are equipped with patented combustion systems, engine controls and monitoring technology, allowing them to meet all relevant international emission standards while offering high levels of efficiency, durability and reliability.
