GE's Largest Jenbacher Units Fueled by Gas from Unmined Australian Coal Beds
A new energy plant in southeastern Queensland, Australia, featuring 11 of GE Energy's largest Jenbacher gas engines, is being built to use coal seam gas from unmined coal beds as fuel to generate electricity for the regional grid.
The 30MW Daandine Power Generation Project (with a total installed base of 33.5 MW) is being developed by Arrow Energy NL in the Surat Basin, approximately 30km west of Dalby in southeast Queensland and about 250km west of Brisbane.
For the two-phase project, GE supplied 11 of its Jenbacher JGS 620 GS-S.L gas engines. The first stage consists of six sets, featuring generators and standard engine accessories that include gas trains and DIA.NE control panels. The second phase of the project consists of the remaining five sets. GE provided the Jenbacher engine management system while overall site SCADA control and turnkey design was provided by Clarke Energy. Delivery of the units to the site was to be completed by November 2006.
Each unit is able to produce 3.04MW, with an electrical efficiency of 43.3% per engine. First sales of electricity from the Daandine station were expected before the end of 2006. All output will be sold to New South Wales energy retailer Country Energy under a long-term power purchase agreement.
Utilizing coal seam gas, consisting of more than 90% methane, for power generation provides significant energy benefits. The gas can be harvested independently of coal mining and its stable composition allows it to be directly fed into gas engines.
Arrow Energy focuses on the exploration and development of such coal seam gas resources in South and Central Queensland and Northern New South Wales. The Daandine facility is located immediately to the south of Arrow's Kogan North Project and co-located with the Kogan North Compression Facilities.
Clarke Energy Australia, a wholly owned subsidiary of England-based parent Clarke Energy Limited, authorized longtime distributor and service provider of GE's gas engine business, designed, supplied and is installing the Jenbacher units as part of its turnkey project on behalf of Arrow Energy.
This is GE's first Jenbacher engine order with Arrow Energy, although Jenbacher gas engine products have a strong presence in Australia. With this latest order there are more than 127 Jenbacher units in Australia and New Zealand.
