GE Jenbacher To Provide Engine Units For Italian Landfill Energy Project
26 March 2004 09:50
JENBACH, AUSTRIA – March 26, 2004 – GE Jenbacher has been awarded an $8.2 million contract (6.77 million euros) to supply six, 1.4-megawatt generator sets to be used at one of Italy’s most powerful landfill-energy plants.
Austria-based GE Jenbacher, which is part of GE Energy, will supply AMIAT SPA with GE Jenbacher’s newest generator set model, the JGS 420 GS-L.L (version A21). The six units will be used at the Basse di Stura landfill, one of Italy’s largest landfills. The site is located near Turin in northwestern Italy.
The generator sets will use landfill methane gas to generate electricity, which will then be sold to the public power grid. Natural gas will be the backup power source.
Basse di Stura will also be Italy’s most efficient landfill-energy project. The plant will have an electrical efficiency exceeding 41%. The engines will also lower emissions by using the CL.AIR® system, which allows thermal re-combustion of engine exhaust gases. The system will reduce carbon oxide emissions to a value of less than 300 mg/NM3 (5% O2).
The turnkey project is being executed by GE Jenbacher and AB Impianti of Brescia, Italy. GE Jenbacher will supply the engines, and CL.AIR® systems, as well as engine commissioning and startup services as part of a four-year maintenance contract. AB Impianti will handle engineering and civil works, as well as the MV boards, biogas transport system, container, supervision system, engine auxiliaries, plant commissioning and startup services.
The GE equipment will be manufactured at the company’s facilities in Jenbach, Austria. The units will be delivered in June 2004 and installed a month later. The equipment’s commissioning and commercial start-up is scheduled for August 2004.
GE Jenbacher has a strong presence in Italy, with an installed base of more than 500 engines in the past 30 years. GE Jenbacher is a leading supplier of engines for landfill-energy projects in Italy, providing nearly 30 of them in 2003.
