GE Energy Receives Largest Jenbacher Gas Engine Order - Projects Support Bangladesh Rural Electrification Initiative

19 December 2007 16:04

GE Energy has received its largest order ever for Jenbacher gas engines to support a major rural electrification initiative in Bangladesh. Combined, the engines will generate about 81 MW in electricity at four new power plants to support developing areas of this South Asian country.

GE is supplying 28 of its Jenbacher J620 GS natural gas-fueled engine type to Doreen Power Generation & Systems Ltd. and Doreen Power House & Technologies Ltd., which are subsidiaries of Asian Entech Power Corp. Ltd. and Saiham Power Plant Ltd. respectively, both based in the capital city of Dhaka.

Three power plants will be built, each with eight of GE's JGS 620 GS-N.L Jenbacher generator sets, while a fourth plant will feature four of the units. The three larger power plants will be built in Narsingdi, Tangail and Feni, while the fourth plant will be located in Mahipal.

The gen-sets will support the national grid, utilizing the region's natural gas supplies as a primary fuel source to generate electricity and thus helping Bangladesh meet its fast-growing demand for power.

The tender for the power plant projects was floated by Power Cell, a government agency within the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources created to reform the country's power sector, including through the development of independent power producers (IPPs).

A power purchase agreement is in place between the two project developers and the Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) and Rural Electrification Board (REB).

"This order represents a significant opportunity to showcase the capabilities of GE's Jenbacher gas engines to meet the growing rural as well as industrial on-site power requirements of Bangladesh and other developing countries around the world," said Prady Iyyanki, CEO of GE's Jenbacher gas engine business.

Tahzeeb Alam Siddiqui, Managing Director of Asian Entech Power Corp. Ltd., added: "GE's Jenbacher gas engine technology is already well-known as a cost-effective power generation system approach for the Bangladesh industrial sector. We have chosen Jenbacher gas engines for our rural electrification projects based on the units’ reliability and performance record."

Currently GE has more than 100 installed Jenbacher units in Bangladesh.

The Jenbacher engines are being manufactured at GE's gas engine headquarters and manufacturing center in Jenbach, Austria. The units are scheduled to be delivered in July 2008, with installation scheduled between September and October 2008. The engines are expected to start commercial operation in the fourth quarter of 2008. Prompt and efficient customer service for the units is to be supplied by GE's authorized Jenbacher engine distributor for the region, Orient Energy Systems.
