Turbo Power Systems - High Performance Generators for Distributed Generation

Turbo Power Systems design and manufacture a range of advanced solutions for the Distributed Generation and Power Quality markets. The systems, which include Turbo Generators and Inverters, are capable of operating stand alone, parallel to the grid or as standby units for back-up power and peak shaving purposes.

TURBO GENERATOR SYSTEMS

Turbo Power Systems' technology is based on aero-derivative gas turbine systems directly coupled to the TPS High-Speed Permanent Magnet Generators, therefore eliminating the need for a gearbox and offering a very high power density Generator. Currently 1.2MWe, 23,000rpm systems are available for a wide range of commercial and industrial applications, such as:

• Paper mills
• Dairy farms
• Food manufacturing
• Other continuous process manufacturing plants

In addition to natural gas applications, the TPS systems can also run off liquid fuel and alternative fuels such as biogas and flare gas from landfill sites.

Turbo Power Systems’ has previously developed High-Speed Generators and Inverters in the range of 10-400kW, 30-60,000rpm and continue to investigate new applications for High-Speed Generators and Inverters.

POWER ELECTRONICS - REMOTE MONITORING AND CONTROL

Turbo Power Systems' generating systems benefit from advanced power electronics designed and manufactured at the company's power electronics division in Gateshead. This enables remote monitoring and control ability and allows them to switch seamlessly between operations:

• Grid parallel import
• Grid parallel export
• Isolated operation single unit
• Isolated operation multiple units

By exporting power to the grid, customers can benefit from selling the surplus electricity back to their utility greatly improves the customers return on their investment. For schemes which run-off alternative fuels the price that the electricity can be sold for is generally much higher.

INVERTERS FOR FUEL CELLS, WIND TURBINES AND SOLAR POWER

Turbo Power Systems’ power electronics are designed to be UL1741 and IEEE1547 compliant and can be applied to other energy sources such as fuel cells, wind turbines, solar power and other applications requiring power quality improvements and grid interconnection capability.
