Lumasense Technologies - Fibre-Optic Temperature Measurement

LumaSense Technologies (formerly Luxtron Corporation) pioneered the field of fiber-optic winding temperature measurement more than 25 years ago and today is a premier provider of direct, real-time hotspot monitoring and temperature control systems for the power utility industry.

LUMASENSE FIBER-OPTIC TEMPERATURE MEASUREMENT

  • Inherently safe, reliable and stable
  • No calibration or maintenance
  • Solid state fluoroptic light source, no lamps
  • Quality and ruggedized fiber-optic probes
  • Built for the field, not just the lab
  • Direct measurement, no simulation or inference

Designed for field monitoring of power transformers, the LumaSense ThermAsset®2 winding temperature monitor is a robust control system enabling:

  • Direct, real-time, accurate temperature of transformer windings
  • Dynamic transformer loading based on true winding temperatures
  • Verification of transformer design-integrity during heat run testing
  • Thermal model-calibration and re-calibration
  • Accurate prediction of remaining insulation life
  • Control of cooling system based on direct winding hot spot temperature

Available in one through eight channels, the unit offers full cooling control and transformer protection with alarm status indicators for up to six customer-specific relay functions.

THERMASSET2 - TEMPERATURE MEASUREMENT OF TRANSFORMER WINDINGS

The ThermAsset2 offers many of the reliable and proven features found on previous Luxtron WTS-22 systems, considered the standard for fiber-optic temperature measurement of transformer windings in the power utility industry. The same-patented Fluoroptic® Thermometry (FOT) technology is employed using a lifetime LED light source to activate the sensors.

The ThermAsset2 never requires calibration or maintenance on the unit. The ThermAsset2 utilizes the LumaSense Rugged Probes™, the toughest in the industry, along with our new cost-effective Quality Probes™. The ThermAsset2 meets 3,000V surge protection requirement (IEEE C37.90.1- 1989).

SF6 LEAK DETECTION AND MONITORING

Safeguarding the environment is one of today's hot-topics, and a gas such as SF6 attracts attention from the regulators. However, the few alternatives that can be used instead of this gas have their own problems, so it is expected that new regulations will allow the continued use of SF6 with a strict monitoring regime enforced. In addition to its greenhouse effects, the processes of arcing, sparking discharging, etc. causes SF6 to produce by-products.

These by-products degrade the insulating qualities of the gas, which result in the gas either having to be replaced or refined. In addition to this, the most dominant by-product, Thionyl Fluoride (SOF2), decomposes to SO2 and HF in the presence of water. These by-products can be particularly damaging to the health and safety of the workforce.

PHOTOACOUSTIC SPECTROSCOPY (PAS) TECHNOLOGY

LumaSense's SF6 Leak Detector offers an unmatched combination of performance and convenience. Based on the company's Photoacoustic Spectroscopy (PAS) technology, the system offers highly accurate, reliable and stable quantitative gas analysis and detection. The gas detection capability is in the ppb range.

The growing environmental requirements and pressures regarding the use of SF6 make LumaSense's system a coveted tool designed for everyday use. The LumaSense SF6 leak detector meets the demands of both monitoring in the field (i.e., GIS Installations) and for finished equipment manufacturing approval tests. The system is able to monitor unattended for extended periods of time. The monitor's extended self-test routines maintain the reliability of the results, which are available on-line or can be dumped when required.
