Non-Asbestos Flexible Expansion Joints

KOREMA® specialises in the manufacture of ecologically beneficial expansion joints. KOREMA manufactures high-quality non-asbestos expansion joints for all temperatures, and was the first to use acid-resistant mineral fibre cloths (not glass fibre), which were patented in 1970. Additional patents have been granted both in Germany and worldwide.

Non-metallic expansion joints

The contributions KOREMA has made to the non-metallic expansion joint market over more than 40 years have continuously set new standards in material development, product design improvement and manufacturing techniques. The newest of these are SIMIFLON® and ELTROFLON®. Only the most flexible of materials are used in the production of KOREMA multilayer expansion joints.

KOREMA expansion joints are designed for gaseous media. Their temperature range is up to 1,000°C for flue-gases and the upper pressue limit is 1 bar; for shock-proof installations it is up to 3.5 bars.

Belt type expansion joints are the preferred choice for large diameter ducts.
The U-type fabric expansion joint is the most installed version of the KOREMA fabric expansion joints.
KOREMA manufactures all types of custom-made multilayer expansion joints.
The SIMIFLON® light-coloured material used in KOREMA expansion joints is FDA-approved.
The ELTROFLON® (black) material used in KOREMA expansion joints is ATEX-approved.

Belt type expansion joints

Belt type expansion joints are the preferred choice for large diameter ducts. Delivery is available with insulation pre-installed for high-temperature applications, which is necessary to protect the expansion joint from abrasive media.

KOREMA belt type expansion joints are delivered as open ended constructions for site completion. The final splice is made at the site. The storage and installation instructions as well as the necessary adhesives are included with each shipment.

U-type fabric expansion joints

The U-type fabric expansion joint is the most installed version of the fabric expansion joints (KOREMA type A3 or AC3 as well as B3 or BC3). The name ‘flange-type’ is used for expansion joints located between pipe or duct end flanges.

For existing plants the flange design varies according to customer requirements or depending on the constructed steel design. For innovative designs KOREMA will identify the suitable technical and economical solution.

Custom-made multilayer expansion joints

KOREMA manufactures all types of custom-made multilayer expansion joints. Each joint is tailor-made. Layers of material are assembled on a frame which conforms exactly to the required profile. Products and features include:

  • Bellows type expansion joints including or without reinforcing rings / frames
  • Diaphragms
  • Expansion joints for varying cross sections and transitions
  • Construction from round to rectangular
  • Construction according to drawings
  • Non-standard high temperature seals
  • Compound movement

FDA-approved expansion joints

The SIMIFLON® light-coloured material used in KOREMA expansion joints is designated foodstuff quality and certified according to § 177.2600/177.1550 CFR of the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations as well as for the EU regulations EU 2002/72/EG.

ATEX-approved expansion joints

The ELTROFLON® (black) material used in KOREMA expansion joints is designated foodstuff quality and certified according to § 177.2600/177.1550 CFR of the US FDA regulations as well as for the EU regulations EU 2002/72/EG.

ELTROFLON provides extremely good electrical conductivity. The electrical conductivity characteristics provide the necessary protection for equipment with explosive media – see ATEX guidelines 94/9/EG. This material conforms to the rules for pressurised devices as described in 97/23 EG and burst pressure PAS 1010/6.

White Papers

  • KOREMA links tradition with innovation

KOREMA® is one of the leading manufacturers of flexible expansion joints. Expansion joints connect up pipelines. These transition elements compensate for movements and can also act as acoustic and thermal decouplers. The various designs arise from the different movements which need to be absorbed: belt types, U types and a variety of special designs.
