New Fuel Cell Air Delivery Systems from VAIREX

19 August 2003 14:59

In response to the fuel cell industry’s accelerated development of auxiliary power units (APU) as well as its demand for more sophisticated air management systems, Vx has announced a new family of air delivery systems providing the critical air supply for PEM and Solid Oxide fuel cells. Specifically designed to optimize fuel cell power system performance, the new VV-series of air delivery systems are also designed for low cost in large scale production, expected to start in 2004. This schedule conforms to the fuel cell industry’s projected shipments of APU systems starting in 2005 with vehicular systems soon after. Units in limited quantity are now available for system integration and optimization.

The radically new VV-series is designed specifically to meet operating, environmental and packaging parameters defined by fuel cell system integrators. Applications include stationary power systems, automotive APU and main vehicular traction systems in the power range from 1 kW to 100 kW.

The compressor family’s design provides maximum flexibility for meeting specific system requirements. For example, different compressor units may be “ganged” to provide multiple air streams. Or, in systems where there is sufficient energy in the stack exhaust gases to warrant energy recovery, a unit can be added to act as an expander.

The VV-series air delivery systems are fully integrated, including the appropriate sized compressor and integrated brushless dc motor, motor speed controller, inlet air filter with replaceable element, and inlet noise suppressor.

The new air delivery systems feature
· Low power consumption
· Compact system volume and weight
· Clean air supply free of particle and hydrocarbon contamination
· Integrated air system

The new air delivery systems will be shown publicly for the first time at the Grove Symposium in London, 24 – 26 September 2003.
