The year 2009 marks the 90th anniversary of Cummins Power Generation and celebrates a long history of innovation. From its beginnings in 1919 with David Onan’s invention of the Ten-lite generator to today’s pre-integrated PowerCommand® systems, Cummins Power Generation has established its reputation as a world leader in power generation.

With a global network of more than 550 distributors and 5,000 sales and service outlets spanning 190 countries around the globe, Cummins Power Generation, a division of Cummins, is a major player in the supply of power solutions for standby, prime power and continuous duty applications.

Serving a broad range of customers, including commercial, industrial, emergency and residential, its products include temporary or permanent pre-integrated power systems; combining generator sets ranging from 8kVA to 3,300kVA, plus power control and transfer technologies tailored to customers’ exact requirements. Services range from system design, project management, operation and maintenance contracts, to the development of turnkey power plants.

From the northern to the southern hemispheres, Cummins Power Generation supplies power systems for complex and sophisticated applications where critical loads and safety are paramount such as airports and hospitals. Its products also provide power to arenas, hotels, refineries, construction and telecommunications towers, and it supplies critical operation power systems in secure buildings such as banks, data centres, embassies and government offices.

From a hospital in Qatar, where patient care will not be interrupted thanks to a standby power system from Cummins, to the world-famous Sydney Opera House, where a standby power system from Cummins ensures uninterrupted performances of touring theatre, ballet and musical productions, the company supplies solutions to a broad range of customers to meet their specific power requirements.

Andy Underwood, general manager, Cummins Power Generation Europe, says: “Cummins Power Generation has unique expertise, in that all aspects of generator set design, manufacture and service have been brought together in one company. All the major components – the engine, alternator and control systems – are manufactured by divisions of Cummins. This integral approach, what we call ‘the power of one’, means each element of a generator set is matched to work in harmony from the start.”

A commitment to investing hundreds of million dollars a year in new technology keeps Cummins products on the leading edge of the industry. This includes research and development of alternative energy solutions other than diesel, such as natural gas, fuel cell technology and alternative fuel generator sets.

The company has business offices and manufacturing operations located around the world. The Ramsgate (Kent) plant has more than 600 employees, primarily supporting European, Middle Eastern and African markets.
