Largest ever project sees Energyst CAT Rental Power install temporary power plant for island of Cyprus

One of the oldest civilisations of the Mediterranean that dates back some 10,000 years will avoid a summer plagued by power cuts thanks to a solution from temporary power specialists Energyst CAT Rental Power.

A team of 25 engineers from Energyst’s international division has worked around the clock on Cyprus to install 50MW of temporary power at the island’s Dhekelia power station near to the seaside resort of Larnaca.

Energyst worked in partnership with Danish power specialist Burmeister & Wain Scandinavian Contractor (BWSC) to install the temporary power for the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC). BWSC won the tender to install a permanent upgrade to the Cypriot power station but this massive project will take until June 2009 to install. As part of the contract BWSC had to ensure temporary power for this year’s tourist season which stretches from the beginning of June until the end of September. BWSC turned to Energyst International to help the company meet immediate demand this summer while its massive permanent installation progresses. BWSC has a solid reputation and vast experience in the HF power plant market.

Each year, Cyprus faces a massive growth in its population as over 2.5 million tourists flock to the beautiful island. The impact of this surge in demand for power sees the island’s utilities fully stretched.

Speaking of the installation, Bert van Dijck, Energyst International’s general manager said: “Our installation took a team of 25 professionals near on three months engineering and one month to install, however it was hugely successful and we know that the residents of Cyprus, both permanent and temporary can rest easy in the knowledge that this summer there will be enough power to meet every eventuality.”

For the island of Cyprus, visitors and residents can enjoy a summer free from the typical power cuts associated with other holiday resorts. EAC’s generation development manager, Stelios Stylianou, said of Energyst: “The company brought together the best team from across the world to deliver a temporary solution that supports our long-term power strategy. Our aim is for visitors to have a fantastic holiday in Cyprus and to return year after year. The solution provided by Energyst International will help to make this aim a reality.”
