FG Wilson Powers Lifesaving Operations in Kabul
12 February 2003 15:13
Power-cuts at a children’s hospital in war-torn Kabul, which cause unnecessary deaths there everyday, are being eradicated thanks to a kind gesture by one of the world's largest genset manufacturers.
FG Wilson is supplying a generator, worth over £7,000, to the Indira Ghandi Children’s Hospital in Kabul, Afghanistan, free of charge, following a compassionate plea from an English housewife. The essential equipment, which will begin its journey to Kabul this month, will supply vital backup power to the troubled and critically under-funded facility.
Stephen Torrans, Vice-President People Services, FG Wilson, says that when the company heard of the hospital’s distress, it was only too happy to power a solution.
“We received a letter from a lady in England called Katie Dudley. Katie had read a report in a national newspaper about the troubled Indira Ghandi Children’s Hospital in Kabul. As a mother, she was moved and asked us to help supply it with power. Given its plight, and given the plight of Afghanistan following events in the past year, we felt that we could not refuse”, he said.
“We were informed that children are dying on the operating table at the hospital during power cuts, simply because it does not have a generator. Thus, we are delighted to provide assistance, and we hope that this will make a big difference to the children in the hospital and to Kabul in general”, Mr Torrans continued.
Getting the generator to the war-torn middle eastern country is proving to be no easy task. It will leave Larne this week on its long and arduous journey, being shipped by FG Wilson to its office in Jebel Ali in Dubai before being taken on by the UN who will fly it to Kabul. An FG Wilson-trained UN representative will then install it in the hospital. The journey should take approximately 5-6 weeks.
