Donnchadh Irish of ESBI will present a paper on the Moneypoint Environmental Retrofit Project (MERP), at the fifth annual Experts Conference in Berlin on 27 September 2010.

Entitled ‘Exploring the Retrofit of SCR and FGD Technology at Moneypoint Coal-Fired Station to Meet the Electricity Supply Board (ESB) Emissions Reduction Strategy in Ireland’, the paper will:

  • Explore the strategy adopted by ESB in approaching the retrofit of SCR and FGD technology to the existing Moneypoint 3x305MWe coal-fired station
  • Assess the business case for the new emissions reduction equipment as well as the requirement for station refurbishment to ensure that existing plant maintained high availability and performance
  • Discuss how the project assisted the Irish Government policy to achieve National Emissions Reduction Plan targets
  • Explore the selection of high dust SCR technology, urea-to-ammonia technology and semi-dry FGD processes to satisfy the lowest lifecycle cost basis and on-site by-product storage potential
  • Review the implementation of a diverse, multi-contract project in which safety was the highest priority as well as the continued operation of adjacent units during the retrofit process

Donnchadh Irish is one of ESBI’s leading experts in boilers and pressure part technology. He is responsible for providing technical expertise on all aspects of boilers and auxiliary plant, including design and operation, for ESBI.
