These days, it has become increasingly difficult for operators of early model gas turbines to source replacement parts not only for their older model turbine but also for the electronic control that was originally installed with it.

Many OEMs no longer support the analog control system that was installed, which makes it difficult for an operator to maintain a proper inventory of on-hand spare parts. Often, the only option offered by the OEM is to repair the part, which can take several weeks, and cost nearly half of the retail price new (which has a 14 week lead time or more).

GENERAL ELECTRIC CONTROLS

As a result, operators are increasingly faced with pressures to upgrade their control systems, an option that carries with it daunting costs, including cost of equipment, downtime for installation and calibration, and re-training of personnel.

On top of that, the software based micro-controller offered by many OEMs as an upgrade leaves the operator with a system that on the one hand is more sensitive to the environment, and on the other hand is opaque: the operator's technicians lack the tools and knowledge necessary to maintain and program the control, leaving the operator dependent on the OEM for all servicing of the control.
