Solvina - Simulator Technology for Power Plant Control

Solvina provides know-how and methods to create enhanced performance and availability in the power industry. It provides optimal power plant control using simulator technology in conceptual design, tuning and commissioning. This means its thoroughly tested solutions can be put into operation quickly. Solvina's solutions mean high availability and production and it always focuses on the entire system to avoid sub-optimisation. Solutions are delivered for different systems in power plants aiming at best stability and efficiency for:

  • Boiler and steam system control
  • Turbine governor control
  • Generator excitation systems

Dynamic simulators for power plants

Solvina has developed advanced methods to increase the availability and stability of power plants. By developing control strategies in dynamic simulators there is fewer disturbances and more efficient and shorter commissioning during planned outages.

Dynamic simulators can be used for the design of process equipment since both steady state (BOP) and dynamic simulations reveal the required performance. Simulation is used in the whole project process, from conceptual design, purchase process, fine tuning and commissioning to training.

Solvina develops and improves process control systems such as boiler control, steam bypass control and accumulator control. It ensures correct process control from the start and design processes which are efficiently controlled and operated. The process control experts help you with designing superior control strategies. The systems Solvina optimises include drum level control, steam temperature control, air draught control and steam pressure control (bypass and accumulator).

Simulators for turbine governor

A turbine governor often has many control modes and functions for turbine protection. All these functions have an effect on plant performance. Solvina optimises the control modes for best possible performance and also tunes limiters and protections to allow best possible dynamic performance while still maintaining the protective function.

A simulator connected to the governor control is used for tuning frequency response in normal and in island operation. This simulator is a hardware in the loop simulator and allows very fast and accurate tuning during full operation of the plant.

Dynamic simulators for AVR control

The automatic voltage regulator (AVR) of generators has several control modes and modules for limitations and stabilisation. Solvina performs tuning of AVR systems and stabilisers to meet grid code requirements and local requirements due to parallel operation and load variations. Dynamic simulation of the surrounding power system is performed to get the best possible result. The settings are followed up in the commissioning phase. The voltage control with regard to grid codes and actual local load conditions, the MVAr control with regard to the parallel units, current limiters and power system stablilisers (PSS).
