Allen Gears Services - Gearbox repair and overhaul success
03 September 2004 12:07
Allen Gears Services, the stand-alone aftermarket business launched last
April, reports good progress in its first year of operation - and positive
prospects for the future.
Created to give worldwide customers and operators of high-integrity
gearboxes new scope to improve their applications cost-effectively, Allen
Gears Services has already established close rapport with Siemens of Demag
Delaval Industrial Turbomachinery Ltd (DDIT), Siemen's gas turbine busines
in Lincoln.
"In partnership with Siemens DDIT, we have built up a bonded store of parts
that are available to support end users with Siemens DDIT maintenance
contracts in case of problems or specific requirements," reports Rory Cull,
Aftermarket Business Manager.
"The store is now fully equipped so we are in the position of being able to
supply strategic spares with zero lead time. In addition, Siemens DDIT are
very satisfied with the service we're providing with additional engineering
support, again reducing lead time in problem resolution, reducing their
costs and speeding up their response times."
Meanwhile the aftermarket business’s new repair and overhaul facility is complete at Pershore.
“Our main focus is to cut out non value-added time on overhauls,” adds Rory. “We have also set up efficient modern stock control and ordering systems.”
Allen Gears Services has also scored successfully for another major customer, the Swedish Navy – on a personal front as well as on operational aspects. Ten Navy engineering representatives who will be involved in operation and maintenance of gearboxes in the new Visby-class stealth warships spent a week with the Allen Gears team, learning technical aspects of the job and renewing long-standing friendships with the Pershore people.
“Their visit involved both hands-on mechanical engineering , control systems work and elements of theory in the classroom,” explains Rory. “They had a busy week and I know they benefited considerably, as well as enjoying their opportunity to meet us.
“We have had a long and very positive relationship with the Swedish Navy and this visit improved our knowledge and appreciation of the operational conditions and challenges their engineering teams face.”
Gary Case, the Allen Gears engineering specialist based in North America, flew to the UK to help the Swedish Navy personnel deliver their control-system training.
