Allen Gears Services in Wind Energy Business
03 September 2004 12:08
Aftermarket Services’ role expanded still further recently with its first contract for the wind-power market.
Allen Gears’ aftermarket experts were called in after an over-speed had wrecked the pinion drive shaft of a wind turbine in Cornwall. A replacement 1.6MW gearbox was shipped to Pershore along with the original unit to enable specialists to transfer undamaged external casings from the failed unit to fit the replacement gearbox, ensuring an early return to service for the wind turbine.
“We’re now undertaking root cause analysis work to establish the nature of the failure and to make recommendations for repair and upgrade,” reports Aftermarket Sales Engineer Mark Annis. “This work comes as a result of our keeping close tabs on the growing wind turbine sector.
Meanwhile, at sea, the ways Allen Gears Aftermarket personnel have met exceptionally tight technical specifications and timescales for supplying a set of drive pinions to the naval marine market has led to a follow-up order from the same customer for a further two sets, worth more than £150,000. The new pinions are set for delivery in December this year and January 2005.
And far away in troubled Iraq there’s at least one happy story – the story of a gearbox. An operator of a gas-turbine power plant has asked Aftermarket Services to produce an exact replica of a tried and trusted Allen Gears unit that has provided yeoman service for no fewer than 46 years. Its replacement, built to identical specifications as the robustly reliable 1958 gearbox, will be delivered this July – ready to keep the customer in business for at least another 46 years!
