Allen Gears Services supplies crucial gearbox spares
03 September 2004 12:11
Allen Gears Services, the recently-created stand-alone business to benefit gearbox operators and customers worldwide, has won a £250,000 order for spares for a crucial gearbox equipping motor-driven cooling-water pumps at a nuclear power station.
“Because of the critical nature of these pumps the order involves a complete spare vertical epicyclic gearbox and spare internal parts,” reports Aftermarket Sales Manager Kevin Sierwald. “The order was placed in February and equipment will be delivered in August.”
Meanwhile the site services role of Aftermarket Services has scored an impressive win in the eyes of the operators of a major combined-cycle power station on Teeside. Allen Gears site services specialists undertook the first full inspection of a competitor’s’ parallel-shaft gearbox equipping a GE industrial gas turbine.
The gearbox was removed and examined using Allen Gears recommended maintenance procedures, with 24-hour working to meet the customer’s 10-day outage schedule. And inspection, preparation of detailed drawings, spin-test and handover was actually completed in just six days – much to the customer’s delight.
“The assistant gas turbine engineer on site praised the professionalism and our whole aftermarket team,” reports Kevin. “We’ve now been asked to carry out similar work on another gearbox, this time from a different competitor.”
