Allen Gears wins superyacht award

Staff at UK-based specialist gearbox specialist Allen Gears are celebrating their success in a major new design award for technical advances in the superyacht industry.

The firm’s Millennium gearbox, specially designed and built recently for a world speed-record challenger in the superyacht category, has achieved a place in the International Superyacht Technology and Innovation awards at the industry’s first equipment and services trade show.

The achievement at the event, in Nice, is a major fillip for Allen Gears as the company expands its role in this challenging and highly competitive new industry.

“Our award winning product is the main propulsion gearbox for the Millennium 140 megayacht, a vessel designed and built by Mulder Design of Holland in a bid to create the world’s fastest vessel of its type,” says Allen Gears Managing Director Neil Whittaker.

“We developed the ultimate weight and size solution through new and innovative design and technologies including the use of aluminium gear casing, electron-beam welding of thin-walled fabricate gearwheels and the realignment of the vessel’s engine configuration.”

Allen Gears’ achievement is applauded by the vessel’s designer, Frank Mulder.

“The firm’s approach to designing and engineering a complex gearbox like this was done in a systematic and professional manner,” says Mr Mulder.

“I am very impressed with the level of engineering and quality control. Also, Allen Gears proved the lightest in competition with two other manufacturers, and weight it extremely important. Available space in the engine-room is limited and we gained the most practical solution for this challenge, too.”
