Peter Brotherhood’s Expertise in the Sugar Industry Wins Innovative Contract In Australia

27 September 2004 15:25

Peter Brotherhood Ltd, which specialises in the design and manufacture of steam turbines, has secured a £3 million (AUS $7.7 million) contract to supply Queensland-owned electricity supplier Ergon Energy a 25.5 MW extraction condensing turbo alternator set.

The company will design and manufacture the geared turbine at its facility in Peterborough, UK. The complete unit will be tested on steam at the facility prior to delivery to the Isis Central Sugar Mill in the Bundaberg region of Queensland, Australia in 2005. The plant will be operational by mid 2006.

The mill burns bagasse (the waste product that remains after processing sugar cane) to raise steam which is passed through the extraction condensing turbo alternator set to provide power and process steam.

This application is a very efficient method of producing power and process steam. The process is also environmentally friendly as the CO2 emitted whilst burning bagasse is absorbed by the growing sugar cane crop and therefore does not add to the global greenhouse effect. Approximately 65,000 MW a year will be generated to help meet the growing demand around the Bundaberg region.

The Peter Brotherhood turbo alternator set will comprise a multi-stage steam turbine and a gearbox, both of which will be mounted on a common bedplate. The AC generator and complete water cooled condensing plant will be sub contracted by Peter Brotherhood Ltd.

"We have been producing turbo alternator sets for the sugar industry for over fifty years and have over 500 machines installed worldwide," said Ray Bowell, General Manager of steam turbine sales. "We have similar turbo alternator sets running in Fiji, South Africa, Vietnam, Kenya and Zimbabwe and it is because of our extensive experience in the cane sugar industry that we have won this contract."

Peter Brotherhood designs and manufactures steam turbines and turbo alternator sets from 1 to 40 MW. The company specialises in supplying machines for onshore and offshore applications including power generation plants, sugar mills, FPSO vessels, container ships and waste-to-energy plants.
