EAST HARTFORD, Conn., August 10, 2004 – The Electricity Supply Board (ESB) in the Republic of Ireland has agreed to purchase two additional Pratt & Whitney Power Systems FT8â SWIFTPACä units. ESB Power Generation will site the units at its power generation facility in the town of Rhode. The units, each providing 50 megawatts of quick response peaking capacity, are scheduled to enter commercial service later this year.
This order is a follow-on to an order placed last year for two SWIFTPAC units, which entered commercial operation at ESB’s power generation facilities in Counties Cork and Mayo on Dec. 12, 2003, three
weeks ahead of schedule.
“The relationship between ESB and Pratt & Whitney Power Systems has been a success story,” said Donal Crean, manager, ESB Major Projects. “The units have been delivered on time and are meeting guaranteed performance commitments.”
Peter Christman, Jr., president of Pratt & Whitney Power Systems, said, “We are pleased to have been selected by ESB Power Generation, a very discerning customer with a strong reputation for customer service. The SWIFTPAC is a proven unit designed to provide the quick, reliable power needed by ESB and its customers.”
The FT8 series is designed and manufactured by Pratt & Whitney Power Systems and is a derivative of Pratt’s JT8D aircraft engine, one of the most successful flight engines in aviation history. The FT8 gas turbine incorporates the technology of the JT8D to produce power with low emissions and high base load and part load efficiency using natural gas fuel. The FT8 fleet has more than 1.4 million hours in operation.
