ThyssenKrupp - High-Performance Industrial, Energy and Power-Generation Alloys

Wherever established industrial technologies are stretched to their limits and new ones created, ThyssenKrupp VDM's high-performance alloys play a vital role, guaranteeing that technological innovation will be both practically and economically viable.

High-performance industrial alloys

We have been developing high-performance alloys for the most demanding applications for many decades. This experience has made us one of the world's leading suppliers of these materials.

Our product range is correspondingly broad and varied. It includes semi-finished items in nickel alloys and special stainless steels, as well as precision-engineering products. These materials meet the specific needs of a diverse range of industries.

Tailor-made and new industrial alloys

Our special strengths are in the development of tailor-made material concepts and new manufacturing technologies. ThyssenKrupp VDM materials are key elements of many branches of industry, vital to the feasibility and practical implementation of entire technologies.

High-performance alloys for industrial furnaces

The processes which take place in industrial furnaces make extreme demands on the materials used, demanding the very best-quality materials such as ThyssenKrupp high-performance alloys. This is due to the often extreme temperatures as well as the strongly corrosive atmosphere (which promotes carburisation, sulphidising, halogenation and oxidation).

High-alloy austenitic stainless steels

High-alloy austenitic stainless steels from ThyssenKrupp VDM's product portfolio are used at operating temperatures of up to 850°C. Higher operating temperatures of up to about 1,200°C can only be achieved using nickel alloys.

Besides displaying excellent strength at high temperatures, furnace construction materials are also expected to be resistant to corrosive environments. They must also have good hot and cold-forming properties. In addition, welding is involved in many applications, so ThyssenKrupp VDM offers a wide selection of welding consumables, mostly with the same chemical composition as the base material.

Energy production and environmental engineering metallic alloys

In the energy and environmental engineering industries, the implementation of eco-friendly concepts and responsible utilisation of resources is more vital than ever.

Metallic high-performance alloys from ThyssenKrupp VDM play a major role in this context. They help increase the efficiency of power stations and provide for the eco-friendly conversion of fossil primary energy into electricity.

Applications in environmental engineering are geared towards keeping air, water and soil clean. Responsible use of fossil combustibles protects both resources - which are getting scarcer - and the environment.

High-volume production of solid oxide fuel cells

With its new material for interconnector plates - Crofer 22 APU - ThyssenKrupp VDM also paves the way for the realisation of high-volume production of solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC) at lower costs.

Heat-resistant industrial alloys

Heat exchangers, gas turbine casing components, and heat resistant components in combined-cycle power stations with integrated coal gasifiers are just a few examples of applications for our newly developed heat resistant alloys, featuring improved hot strength and chemical stability in corrosive media. They also have excellent processing behaviour, and are readily available at all times.

Alloys for flue gas desulphurisation plants

Plants for the treatment of flue gases are an integral part of modern lignite and coal-fired power stations.

High-performance alloys from ThyssenKrupp VDM ensure that they operate in a trouble-free and environmentally friendly manner, by protecting flue gas scrubbers, ducts, control and shut-off systems as well as other components against severe corrosion attack by sulphuric, hydrochloric and hydrofluoric acids, and acidic and halide-containing waters, often at extreme temperatures.

Heat-resistant materials for incineration plants' boilers

With temperatures of up to 1,000°C and highly complex and aggressive combustion gases, operating conditions in the boilers of waste incineration plants call for the use of the extremely heat resistant materials we can provide, capable of strong resistance against sulphiding, carburising and halide-containing media, as well as abrasion and erosion.

Alloys for wastewater treatment and evaporation plants

Industrial water discharged into the public sewer must comply with limits, which in many cases can only be achieved by evaporating the heavily contaminated wastewater. The residues from this process - including highly concentrated alkalis and solidified salts - are extremely aggressive. Nickel alloys such as Nicrofer 5923 hMo-alloy 59 have proved ideal in these evaporation plants.
