In 2001, when the Swedish ethanol producer Lantmannen Agroetanol AB commenced operations in Norrkoping, bioethanol was not much talked about in Europe. When Sweden introduced legislation aimed at making the country independent of oil by 2020, two years later, there was no further doubt that Agroetanol was in the right business. The company responded to the growing demand for bioethanol by deciding to build a new plant with more then double the capacity of the existing facility.
One reason for backing bioethanol is the reduction in CO2 emissions from non-renewable sources that it brings. This objective can only be achieved by production plants that minimise the use of fossil fuel. Because of this Agroetanol opted for Vogelbusch's MULTIPRESSURE® distillation/rectification and dehydration system which is based on the most energy efficient process on the market.
In 2006 Agroetanol awarded Vogelbusch the process engineering contract for the plant. Start-up is scheduled for midsummer 2008. The facility will process wheat for the most part, and will contribute some 470.000 litres of bioethanol per day to Sweden's ambitious efforts.
