Following successful testing at IPH in Berlin, the 20kV transition joint for diameters up to 300 mm2 is now also available with a polymeric outer sleeve. Many customers had already used the joint concept, applying the LoviSil® technique of fluid insulation, satisfactorily. The lower price and weight, possible thanks to the polymeric outer sleeve, are additional advantages.
No risks were taken during testing, according to Product Development Manager Bert Brus. "We based the test set-up on the most awkward combination of cables. Three single-core XLPE cables were connected to a paper-insulated lead cable with three separate lead sheath, also known in Germany as the 'Hochstätter type' ", he explains. The test set-up also included LoviFlex® IAEM type push-on cable terminations.
The testing programme was conducted in compliance with the harmonised European standards HD 629.2 S1 and DIN VDE 0278/629.2. Bert Brus: "We did the testing with a water pressure of 20 metres head of water, so the joint also complies with NEN 3609."
The tested type, K95-20kV, covers an entire range of cables with diameters from 95 to 300 mm2. The first joints are about to be delivered, to German customers in particular.
Other developments are scheduled. Bert Brus: "There is already a great deal of interest in the concept both at home and abroad. Our first aim will be to make this joint suitable for use at a voltage level of 33 kV.
