Lovitherm® GHKI/GHKF Terminations With Patented Stress Control Element

01 February 2005 16:27

When designing terminations, a long life and great reliability are obviously very important factors. One of the most important challenges in this respect is that the electric field around the cable end remains as homogeneous as possible. With the heat-shrink terminations GHKI/ GHKF, which are suitable for single-core and three-core polymeric cables up to 30 kV, a patented stress control element is used for this.

The termination consists of one piece of material, in which the stress control and insulation have been integrated. This high-tracking resistant tube has a coating of silicon carbide on the inside with a high dielectric constant, which slightly melts when heated. During the melting this material exactly fills up any voids that may develop in the transition from semi-conductive layer to core insulation on the cable and the transition from core insulation to the core.

Semi-conductive material with 'solely' stress relief properties, whereby field line concentrations often occur at the aforementionned transitions, is therefore not used in this system. The material of the stress control coating actually 'pushes' the electric field forwards so that it remains more homogeneous. This termination is suitable for both indoor (GHKI) and outdoor (GHKF) applications. Depending on the application and voltage, the basic set is supplied with additional heat-shrink rain sheds.
