A new initiative in Nottinghamshire based on Empower Training Services is helping 11 young people into work.
The 'Programme Led Pathway' is an intensive 16-week course for young people who have left school but have been unable to find permanent employment or venture into further education.
The programme in the short-term will offer young people the chance to learn new skills and earn a wage, whilst the qualification they gain at the end of the programme can significantly improve long-term career prospects.
All 11 young people who took part in the 1st 'Programme Led Pathway' hosted by Empower passed their final exams and now possess a Technical Certificate and National Vocational Qualification level two in fabrication and welding.
Empower Training Services have now found jobs for most students with local engineering companies.
At a ceremony to mark the student's success, John Endersby of the LSC said "The first Programme Led Pathway has been a resounding success and Empower are already over halfway through their second intake of young learners, whose training began in March 2006. Not only has the program given these young people a leg-up on to the first rung of the career ladder, it is also providing industry with the skilled and highly motivated individuals it needs to fill the country's current skills shortage."
