WVC USA Nuclear Valve Solutions team completed a major system upgrade for the Cooper Nuclear Power Station in Brownville, NE. The project included the design of new feed water check valves to replace existing tilting disc check valves which could not pass stringent LLRT (local leak rate test).
WVC USA's Atwood & Morrill (A&M) Swing Check Valve is widely accepted by the US Nuclear Power Industry. Engineers from the Cooper NPS surveyed other power plants and determined that the A&M design was the most reliable and repeatable for LLRD due to the inclined seat angle. The valves supplied to the Cooper NPS included a number of enhanced features to assure reliable operation over a long period of time:
Special end to end dimensions to facilitate installation in an existing plant
Optional conversion to a soft seated design in the future
Integral rigging points to facilitate installation
Extended bushing length for longer life
Live (spring) loaded pressure seal cover with graphite seal ring
Two piece disc/disc arm assembly with controlled clearances for tight sealing
WVC USA Nuclear Valve Solutions also managed the installation and testing of the new valves utilizing its Field Quality Program.
Identical valves are being furnished to Nine Mile NPS for installation by their personnel.
