US Wind Turbine Manufacturing: Federal Support for an Emerging Industry

08 February 2012

This whitepaper published by the Congressional Research Service documents the US wind turbine manufacturing industry, its supply chain, employment and international trade trends and issues affecting its future.

The outlook for wind turbine manufacturing in the US is partially dependent upon federal and state policies encouraged by both wind energy production and the use of US made equipment to generate that energy.

The report says the US wind turbine market grew in size from an estimated $2.7bn in 2005 to $12.5bn in 2009.

It also points out nearly 400 manufacturing facilities produced wind turbines and components in 2010, up from as few as 30 in 2004. Future decisions about the federal policies will affect the extent to which wind turbine manufacturing becomes an important industrial sector in the US.
