Solvina has successfully performed simulated island operation tests of two gas turbines owned by Svenska Kraftnät Gasturbiner AB. The gas turbines B3 and B4 (50MW and 60MW respectively) and have recently been equipped with new control systems. This motivated testing their island operation capability.

The test method, made it possible to test the turbines at conditions equal to island operation conditions, but without the risks involved with disconnecting an isolated grid without knowing that the turbine control systems are capable of controlling the frequency.

This special test method was developed by Solvina in cooperation with Svenska Kraftnät, the owner and operator of the Swedish national electricity grid. It has now been used for testing control behavior and performance of more than 40 units.

The gas turbines will now, after tuning performed during these tests, work perfectly also during real island operation, ie if they have to be run isolated from the main grid.

SAMPOL has recently been involved in the build of the brand new Santo Domingo Metro, a rapid transit system in the capital of the Dominican Republic, and chose Cummins Power Generation to supply the metro's standby power needs.

SAMPOL commissioned its first Cummins product in 2006 for an installation at Valencia Airport. Since then, thanks to the success of this and subsequent installations it has been a regular customer of CPG Madrid.

The Santo Domingo Metro is part of a major national master-plan to improve transportation in Santo Domingo, and across the Dominican Republic. It is hoped this will ease congestion and the heavy air pollution that severely affects productive time and the health of the city.

With PACT Analog, Phoenix Contact provides a complete range of rod, plug-in and winding converters for measuring high currents from 1A to 4,000A. High quality measuring transducers are available in almost 3,000 different designs. Choose from different accuracy classes, capacities and sizes to match specific applications. Various mounting positions enable the use of this range even in applications where space is a critical factor.

In addition to the options for vertical and horizontal mounting on copper rail, the current transformers also offer a DIN rail mounting option and retractable plug-in feet for upright assembly on the wall of the control cabinet.

These current transformers have another important advantage. If the power has, for instance, been specified as 10VA, this refers to the nominal current. The transformer can actually produce 40% more power than specified due to the power reserve amounting to 120% of the nominal current.

Gas Natural has started work on its 400MW Campanillas CCGT plant in Malaga, Spain. The €300m plant will be 60% efficient, and will use Alstom's GT26 gas turbine, steam turbine, heat recovery steam generator (HRSG) and TOPGAS turbogenerator.

Alstom will build, operate and maintain the integrated turnkey power plant. Under the associated operation and maintenance contract, Alstom will provide full operation and maintenance services for 12 years. The company will also be responsible for the civil works, balance of plant and the construction of a 13km water pipeline and 5km gas pipeline.

"The investment is needed to ensure the reliability of power supplies to the Costa del Sol.

E.ON is building a 1,275MW gas-fired combined heat and power (CHP) station on the Isle of Grain in Kent, UK. The £500m station will have three combined-cycle units that will burn natural gas, and will supply waste heat in the form of hot water to the nearby liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal. That will make Grain one of the world's largest CHP plants, and will take its overall efficiency to an expected 72%.

"The plant will produce enough electricity to supply around a million homes."

The new Grain power station is being built under a turnkey contract by Alstom, and will be powered by three Alstom GT26 gas turbines.

Construction of the 90MW Lynn and Inner Dowsing offshore wind farms is underway. The two adjacent wind farms together use more than 50 3.6MW Siemens turbines. They are being constructed at a cost of £300m, 5km off the Lincolnshire coast, UK. Together, the 54 turbines are expected to provide enough power for more than 130,000 homes while significantly reducing CO2 emissions.

The Lynn and Inner Dowsing wind farms are part of the UKCS Round 1 developments to encourage wind power in the UK. They are two neighbouring developments that were acquired in December 2003 and combined into one construction project by Centrica Renewable Energy Limited.
