Tidal Energy Wins Grant for Environmental Monitoring in Wales

12 August 2011

Renewable energy company Tidal Energy (TEL) has received £390,000 from UK-based Carbon Trust to fund its environmental monitoring work at the Ramsey Sound demonstration site off the Pembrokeshire coast in Wales.

The news comes after TEL received £11m from both the Welsh Government through the European Regional Development Fund and majority shareholder Eco2 for the manufacture and deployment of its 1.2 MW DeltaStream device.

The sea bed mounted turbine device will provide electricity to homes in the city of St Davids during its 12-month demonstration period starting next year.

Tidal Energy development director Chris Williams said the deployment of tidal and wave devices off the Welsh coast will provide the nation with 4GW of clean electricity by 2025.

The company is currently working towards deploying Wales' first full-scale tidal stream energy generator in 2012.
