EDF to Move Away From Coal

12 June 2007 09:29

EDF Energy is to phase out its use of coal-fired plants in an attempt to cut CO2 emissions caused through electricity generation by 60% by 2020.

The move will be equivalent to taking thee million cars out of service.

60% of electricity generation will come from two gas stations, with renewable and nuclear energy supplying its remaining energy.

This process will see emissions rise over a short period running up to the power plant closures, the firm admitted.

EDF Energy spokesperson Gareth Wynn said that the company saw a "competitive advantage" in the move, but added that the cut was "in excess of any regulatory demands".

The planned 60% reduction is equivalent to taking 3 million cars off the road, EDF Energy said, and comes as part of wider plans to reduce the company's impact on the environment.

EDF has also announced plans to cut CO2 emissions from consumers' energy use by 15% by 2020.
