UN Sets Security Measures

29 June 2007 16:47

The United Nations is looking closely at security measures undertaken by nuclear industries in China and Qatar in a way similarly seen with Greece and Brazil.

Using a range of "practical arrangements", the UN hopes to erase threats that will come to the nuclear industry in both nations, especially in the lead up to the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.

The UN will advise on physical protection measures with a focus on equipment for the "prevention and detection of criminal acts involving nuclear and radioactive waste".

Meanwhile, the UN is also taking steps to reduce risks created by uranium tailings left in some abandoned mine sites in Central Asia, as part of the Technical Cooperation programme.

The UN says a lot of these sites have not had proper environmental management and pose risks of both radioactive and heavy metal pollution.
