UN Starts Japan Nuclear Inspection06 August 2007 11:18 UN inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) landed in Japan yesterday, where they will start inspecting the nation's Kashiwazaki-Kariwa Nuclear Power Plant which was damaged by an earthquake last month. The Japanese Government invited the IAEA to carry out the inspection in the hope that vital lessons could be learned for other plants around the world that could be at threat from seismic activity. The delegation consists of four internationally recognised experts in seismic safety and two IAEA experts – they will assess the current condition of the plant along with Japan's Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency, the Nuclear Safety Commission and operator Tokyo Electric Power Company.
