UN Completes Japan Nuclear Inspection

09 August 2007 16:12

A UN team has completed a four-day inspection of Japan's nuclear power plant that was damaged by an earthquake last month, a plant official told local reporters.

The magnitude 6.8 earthquake caused malfunctions and leaks at the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa plant in Niigata, causing its closure.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) says it has collected information for an independent report which officials are expected to begin writing next week.

The Japanese Government invited the IAEA to carry out the inspection in the hope that vital lessons could be learned for other plants around the world that could be at threat from seismic activity.
