Australia Lifts Ban on Uranium Sales to India15 August 2007 16:31 Australia has ended its ban on Uranium sales to India, even though India has not signed the Nuclear Non Proliferation Treaty (NPT) which limits the spread of nuclear weapons. The move follows last month's deal between New Delhi and the US allowing India to buy civilian nuclear technology and fuel. Australia has previously not sold the mineral to countries not bound by the treaty. Uranium is mined in Australia and is largely used to fuel commercial nuclear power plants. The NPT was created in 1968 to limit the spread of nuclear weapons. 189 countries have signed the treaty. India and Pakistan have not signed the treaty.
