Bio-Battery Runs on Sugar

24 August 2007 14:44

Electrical technology giant Sony has unveiled a new environmentally friendly bio-battery that generates electricity from sugar.

Tests of the new bio-battery have achieved an output of 50mW, enough to power a personal stereo and pair of speakers.

Sony has developed a system of breaking down sugar to generate electricity that involves immobilizing enzymes using the application of power generation principles found in living organisms.

The bio-battery casing is made of vegetable-based plastic (polylactate), and has been designed in the image of a biological cell.
