New Wave of Technology Produces Power

24 August 2007 16:43

Ocean waves could soon be used to generate electrical power according to research by US scientists.

Scientists from independent US research organisation SRI International have completed the first ocean tests of a system that generates power from the motion of a buoy riding up and down on the waves.

The buoy is made with a clear cylinder in the middle that contains a roll of rubber-like material which stretches and connects as the buoy moves, separating and connecting electrodes together.

Although technology for harnessing ocean energy already exists, it has not been widely used.

Earlier this month SRI began testing the wave-powered generator as part of a project sponsored by Japanese company Hyper Drive Corporation to develop and deploy wave-powered generators around the world.
