South Africa is to start work on two new diesel turbine electricity generation plants in a bid to boost power systems ahead of the 2010 soccer World Cup.

The South African Minerals and Energy Department has awarded the R5bn contract to a consortium led by AES Pacific Ocean Holdings who will run the facilities near Durban in Shakaskraal and Port Elizabeth.

The KwaZulu-Natal facility will produce a capacity of 750mW and the Port Elizabeth plant 330mW.
