Expert Slams Wind Farms

30 August 2007 14:20

The UK Government is paying out millions to subsidise wind farms which are not commercially viable, according to experts.

Talking to the BBC, Michael Jefferson, from the World Renewable Energy Network, says farms are being built in locations across the UK without enough wind.

The criticism has been echoed by scientists who claim many areas are not windy enough to produce enough power to replace traditional methods.

But the British Wind Energy Association (BWEA) have hit back at the claims calling them nonsense.

The government is currently aiming to reach an EU target of 20% of all energy from renewable sources by 2020.

German power company E.ON announced plans yesterday to generate power for 200,000 homes in the UK with a new wind farm off the Yorkshire coast in the north of England.
