New Sanction Calls For Iran Nuclear Programme

13 September 2007 11:55

The US has called for a meeting of world powers to discuss plans for a new round of sanctions against Iran over its nuclear weapons programme.

The five permanent members of the UN Security Council, including Germany, are expected to meet in Washington on 21 September.

Iranian President Mahmood Ahmadinejad has repeatedly gone on record to say there is no reason Iran should stop its activities in which the United States and Britain are also engaged.

The West fears Iran wants to develop nuclear weapons while the government in Tehran insists its programme is aimed solely at electricity production.
