US oil, gas and energy giant ConocoPhillips and US based bio energy company Archer Daniels Midland (ADM) have teamed up to develop renewable transportation fuels from biomass.
The two companies have joined forces to research and commercialise two components of what ConocoPhillips describes as 'a next-generation biofuel production process'.
The first process will be the conversion of biomass from crops, wood or switchgrass into biocrude, a non-fossil substance that can be processed into fuel.
The biocrude will then be refined to produce transportation fuel. "ConocoPhillips believes that the development of next-generation biofuels is a critical step in the diversification of our nation's energy sources," says ConocoPhillips CEO Jim Mulva.
ADM says it hopes the collaboration with the energy giant 'will identify and bring to market feasible, economic and sustainable next-generation biofuels'.
