UK Nuclear Towers Demolished

01 October 2007 15:56

Cooling towers at the world's first full-scale nuclear power station in the UK have been demolished four years after electricity production ceased at the site.

Hundreds of people gathered to watch as the 88m-high towers on the Sellafield site were detonated in pairs as part of the first stage of decommissioning the plant, according to the BBC.

It is expected to take 12 weeks to remove the rubble from the explosions.
