UN Steps In As India Taps US Nuclear Fuel

10 October 2007 17:08

The head of the United Nations energy watchdog is to meet with Indian leaders following controversy surrounding the country’s proposed nuclear deal with the US.

International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) chief Mohamed ElBaradei is holding talks with the Indian Government after the the country's communist party opposed a deal designed to reverse three decades of American anti-proliferation policy by allowing the US to send nuclear fuel and technology to India.

The communists have warned the government against talking to the IAEA about placing civilian nuclear reactors under UN safeguards, a first step in making the deal operational, according to Reuters.

India has previously refused to sign international non-proliferation accords and tested nuclear weapons.
